History of New Horizons Thrift Store

We are thrilled to announce that effective July 1, 2010 New Horizons will be TAX FREE EVERY DAY!

We want to know what you think….. Would you like the store to be open on Sunday’s? Would you like a debit machine at the shop? Give us your ideas! Customer surveys are available to be filled out in the store.

Looking for a way to get involved in the community? Consider volunteering at New Horizons. It is a great way to meet people and work with a REALLY FUN team (if we do say so ourselves). We are on the look out for sorters, receivers and cashiers.

New Horizons Thrift Store had its beginnings at Welcome Inn Community Centre in the late 1970’s and later became its own charity.  In January 2008 Welcome Inn took ownership of the store with a vision to restore this community gem.  Several people in the community helped restore this store and the doors opened to the public in April 2008.

New Horizons Thrift Store Vision:

To offer an alternative shopping experience that is accessible, affordable and environmentally responsible.  To be a community place where people of all backgrounds gather to shop, gain work skills, and develop relationships.

New Horizons Thrift Store Goals:

  • Provide an alternative shopping experience that is accessible, affordable and environmentally responsible.
  • Provide an opportunity for meaningful volunteer work in an environment where job skills can be learned and demonstrated.
  • Provide a friendly environment where people of all backgrounds gather to shop, develop skills, and meaningful relationships with each other.
  • Reduce the amount of waste in landfill by accepting donations of items to be re-sold.
  • To re-invest the proceeds from the store back into the north end community through the programs and services of Welcome Inn Community Centre.

Hours of Operation and Location:

New Horizons Thrift Store is located at 520 James St. N in Hamilton.  The phone number is 905-529-6891.

Store Hours:

  • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 10am – 5pm
  • Thursday 10am – 8pm
  • Saturday 9am – 4pm.

Donations:

Donations are gratefully accepted inside the store, during store hours. Please ensure that no donations are left outside of the store at any point.

Items most frequently needed:

  • Clothing – Men’s, Women’s, Children’s
  • Shoes and Boots
  • Accessories
  • Furniture (we are unable to accept mattresses)
  • Bedding and Towels
  • New/gently used toys
  • Cooking utensils, pots and pans
  • Home décor – lamps, pictures, etc
  • Electronics

Volunteers

The store is completely operated by volunteers.  Volunteers are always needed.  If you are interested in volunteering please click here.
