How You Can Make A Difference at Welcome Inn Community Centre

Every year over 300 people volunteer at Welcome Inn. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people and to share yourself with this community. There are plenty of opportunities for you to be involved!

Volunteer Opportunities

Workshop Facilitators: FinancialPLAN and BizPLAN

Duties: facilitate a two-hour workshop on a topic that you are familiar with in the BizPLAN (home-based business development) &/or FinancialPLAN (budgeting, credit, debt, etc.) workshop series. General course outlines will be made available, but you may prepare handouts, etc. for your workshop to make it your own.

Time Commitment: 2-4 hours (prep and workshop) per workshop facilitated. FinancialPLAN workshops run 5 cycles/year, and BizPLAN workshops will run 4 times/year. You do not necessarily need to facilitate all cycles to participate.

Qualifications: experience in (small) business, finance or other relevant areas; familiarity with adult learning is helpful.

Mentors: Financial PLAN and BizPLAN

Duties: Accompany a PLAN participant on their journey to economic health and/or home-based business start-up. Weekly in-person or telephone conversations to check in and offer support during a time of transition.

Time Commitment: 1 hour per week, with a suggested minimum commitment of six months. Actual time commitment will be negotiated between mentor, PLAN participant, and PLAN staff prior to the commencement of a mentoring relationship.

Qualifications: Appreciative of diversity; good boundaries; excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Welcomer

Duties: welcome visitors, answer phones, take messages, small office tasks, create a welcoming environment for friends.

Time Commitment: 4 hours per week (morning or afternoon)

Qualifications: previous experience in an office environment is an asset, ability to read and write is a must.

Ad-Hoc Board Committee Member

Duties: to share your expertise in a particular area by serving on a committee of the board. Committees include: personnel (human resources, policies); finance (budgeting, fundraising); development (strategic planning, marketing, program development). Ad-hoc members are also required for a time-limited program advisory committee related to establishing the household resilience project. Members of this committee should have an interest in business and finance.

Time Commitment: 2-4 hours every other month (except July and August)

Qualifications: experience in any of the above committee areas is essential

After School Mentor

Duties: work one-on-one with a student on homework and other academically weak subject areas, build a friendship with a student, assist with leading group activities as desired, prepare snacks, set-up and clean-up as required.

Time Commitment: One day per week, 3-5pm

Qualifications: Experience with children and ability to read and write is a must

Board of Directors Member

Duties: accept responsibility for the management of Welcome Inn Community Centre, participate in bi-monthly meetings of the whole board as well as serving on a committee (Personnel, Finance, or Development), participate in strategic planning, fundraising, and more!

Time Commitment: 2-4 hours per month (except July and August)

Qualifications: previous board experience is helpful. Expertise in the areas of long-range planning, finance and/or human resources would be helpful.

Community Visitor

Duties: to provide friendship through visiting a senior in their home.

Time Commitment: one hour per week or one hour every other week depending on the senior

Qualifications: friendly and creative, enjoys being with seniors

Community Phone Visitor

Duties: to regularly check in with an isolated senior by phone

Time Commitment: one or two phone calls per week.

Qualifications: enjoys listening, clear communication skills

Food Pantry Worker

Duties: serve people access the food pantry, sort and assess food, create a friendly, safe and welcoming environment

Time Commitment: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday from 12:00 – 2:30 p.m.

Qualifications: ability to read and write is an asset

Food Pantry Hostess

Duties: Create a friendly, safe and welcoming environment for people accessing the food pantry.

Time Commitment: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday from 12:00 – 2:30 pm

Qualifications: Friendly disposition

Food Sorter

Duties: to sort, organize and put away large quantities of food for the food pantry

Time Commitment: Mondays from 10am-noon

Qualifications: ability to lift heavy boxes

Seniors Program Volunteer

Duties: assist with meal preparation, serving and/or clean up, create a friendly environment for seniors, assist with activities as needed, drive seniors for outings occasionally

Time Commitment: Tuesdays 10am-2pm

Qualifications: previous experience with food handling and seniors is an asset

Summer Day Camp Counselor

Duties: supervise and engage with children aged 5-11, play games, lead music, participate in outings and ensure safety at all times.

Time Commitment: minimum of one week in July and a maximum of 4 weeks in July, Monday to Friday 8:30 – 4:30

Qualifications: ability to work with kids and good physical health is a must

Receiver

Duties: Responsible for receiving all donations received at the store.

Time Commitment: Responsible for receiving all donations received at the store.

Qualifications: able to lift heavy boxes and furniture. Must be a self-starter, as well as able to take direction.

Sorter

Duties: Sort and price all donations which will be sold in the store according to pricing guidelines.

Time Commitment: 4 hours per week

Qualifications: Ability to work well within a system.  Good interpersonal skills.

Clerk

Duties: Ensure the store stock is neat and orderly at all times. Be available to assist customers in a pleasant tone.

Time Commitment: 4 hours per week

Qualifications: Good interpersonal skills.

Cashier/Assistant Manager

Duties: Manage the cash register and cash area at all times. Ensure all transactions are done in a pleasant manner.

Time Commitment: 4 hours per week

Qualifications: Experience in retail is beneficial but not necessary. Able to handle cash transactions accurately. Ability to problem solve.

Manager

Duties: Supervise and support all volunteers on duty. Assist individuals with solving conflicts as they arise. Back-up to cashier when required.

Time Commitment: 4 hours per week

Qualifications: Proven team leadership skills. Ability to problem solve and take initiative as necessary.
